Badenoch Great Place Project

This regional heritage project was developed by Badenoch Heritage (SCIO), working in partnership with the Cairngorms National Park Authority and Voluntary Action in Badenoch & Strathspey, along with several other organisations.

The project established the basis for an active partnership to help promote Badenoch and develop the area as a visitor destination in the Cairngorms National Park.

The sub-title for the project was Badenoch Heritage: Bringing the Past to the 21st Century. The project started in April 2018 and runs until October 2021, with the support of a Great Place Scheme grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Background

The Badenoch Great Place Project (BGPP) took stock of the area’s rich cultural heritage and worked in partnership to put that heritage at the centre of future tourism and economic development. The initiative was informed by the Cairngorms National Parks Partnership Plan 2017-22, which identified Badenoch as a spatial priority area, and in the context of the A9 dualling. The project is being led by the Cairngorms National Park Authority (CNPA) in conjunction with other partners.

Achievements

Much has been achieved so far. This includes the creation of this website, new marketing and branding for Badenoch (“Badenoch The Storylands”), and an annual heritage festival. The project has created a number of driving, cycling and walking tours in the area, which were launched along with the Badenoch The Storylands App in July 2021.

The project also commissioned a number of augmented reality reconstructions of the area’s more iconic sites by Bob Marshall. They are illustrated below but can be viewed in greater detail in the App.
