The Stories Behind the Stories #4

Hello all, Hamish Napier here, one of the storytellers for Badenoch Heritage. All of the stories contained within the new Badenoch – The Storylands smartphone app are here on the website now too. Each week I’ll go into a little more detail about the stories themselves: where they came from, where I read them, who I heard them from and a little more background about each one.

#4 – Badenoch Folk Tales – The Adventures of Seumas Dail Chaorain

Dulchurn, Dalachurn or Dail Chaorian (Dale of the Rowans) was a wee township up Glen Banchor up behind the Badenoch town of Newtonmore. There was a fairy hill there – an entrance to the underworld of the fairies – it’s a prominent lumpy hillock in the landscape where once a hill fort stood. Perhaps growing up right next to this magical place was the reason why local legend Seumas Dail Chaorain had so many intriguing strokes of luck and adventures – they called him the ‘Baron Munchausen of the Highlands’! Many thanks to the amazing Calum Maclean Project for preserving and sharing these precious local stories of a much loved local character!
